Raised in the Pittsburgh area, Dr. Leo R. McCafferty received his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University, his Medical Doctorate from Temple University and completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. His training in Plastic Surgery was at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida under the world-renowned plastic surgeon, D. Ralph Millard, Jr., MD. He is past President of the D. Ralph Millard, Jr., MD Plastic Surgery Society.
Dr. McCafferty is currently a member of The Aesthetic Society and has held key leadership positions within this society since 1992. He has served as President of the society, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and as a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He has received three prestigious awards from The Aesthetic Society: The Tiffany Award for best scientific presentation in 2006, The Leadership Award in 2017 for exemplary leadership, service, creativity and dedication to the subspecialty of aesthetic surgery, and most recently in 2021, The Distinguished Service Award for service above and beyond the expected.
Dr. McCafferty also served on the Ethics Committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery facilities.
Locally, Dr. McCafferty has served organized medicine as President of the Allegheny County Medical Society and then Chairman of the Board of Directors of the society. He was a finalist for the Pittsburgh Business Times Healthcare Heroes Award in 2014.
Dr. McCafferty has served as the plastic surgeon for the men’s and women’s professional US Open Golf Championships and has been the Plastic Surgery consultant to the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team since 1992.
